The Importance of Absurdity

So, I love my European history class. I always knew I liked it, but I didn't realize how much 'til I didn't go yesterday. That class is just frickin' awesome. I mean, we all know that I couldn't ask for a better teacher (heh!). Jones is the man. But I think the best part of the class is the kids. There's really only one kid in there that I don't like. And we won't get into that. But I love the rest of the kids. I love Miki's horrible vocab puns...Wes's rants about John Hunt always flexing...Simel's random, but brilliant comments while playing games on Shelley's phone...Kevin's fat jokes about Nate...Nate's responses to Kevin's fat jokes...Max's plans to exterminate the entire human population...Nick's Logan Pause jokes...Mike's retarded comments...Grace, Natalie and Miki sitting in the "foreign row"...Laura's humble know-it-all comments...everyone's responses to Haney's frequently changing origins and languages spoken...I could go on and on. Today, for example, I worked in a group with Natalie, Laura, Miki and Wes. I'm not real sure how we ended up together, but I'm glad we did. We definitely didn't do any of the work. They made fun of me because I looked (and unintentionally acted) like I was totally stoned. Wes took all of Natalie's red Sour Patch kids. We came up with all sorts of crack jokes/references. We looked around the room and discussed who all smokes weed. We talked about Super Troopers. Jones even came over and sat and talked with us at one point, completely not caring that we weren't doing anything. It was marvelous. I mean, the class is just great. I'm surrounded by 3 of the funniest guys ever. Though it's rare (because it's so much more fun to be asses), we can have incredibly intelligent discussions. Jones understands that we all have insane work loads and lives outside of school and doesn't try to make Euro homework the most important thing in the world.
Of course, there's that whole issue of my not really having to study too much to do well! ;)

There's nothing like running on zero food, zero sleep and head that's about to explode. What fun. I've literally lost about 7 pounds this week 'cause I just can't eat. I had goldfish, and omelette and a peppermint hot chocolate today...that's the most I've had all week. This really bites.

After depriving myself for MONTHS, I've had this need for new music lately. See, I've only bought 4 cds this year, 2 of which were purchased in the past month. Add to that the 5 other cds I've recieved this year (4 for my birthday and one rather randomly from Christiana in June) and it equals not a whole lot (otherwise known as 9). So, for that reason, I've been craving new music. And it's a good thing Christmas is coming!
I already know that I'm getting Toad the Wet Sprocket-Dulcinea and REM-Greatest Hits for Christmas. My list also includes Damien Rice-O, Patty Griffin-1000 Kisses, Andy Osenga-Photographs, Rob Seals-Revolution of One and Jennifer Knapp-Greatest Hits. I intend on purchasing Pete Yorn-Day I Forgot, Wilco-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (yes, Kevin does have a decent amount of influence over me), Edwin McCain-Messenger and Eric Peters-Land of the Living (I thougth that maybe I should own my favorite cd of all time). And, when Mike gets back from Scotland, I intend on burning Guster-Lost and Gone Forever, Ben Folds-Rockin' the Suburbs, Wallflowers-Bringing Down the Horse, BNL-Stunt and Rock Spectacle, Weezer-Blue and Green albums, REM-Monster, and DMB-Under the Table and Dreaming, Live at Luther College and Live at Folsom Field.
Needless to say, I'm excited. Because, after all, what's life without good music?

Sometimes...ok, most of the time, I can't believe how much of a loser I am. I know we all joke around saying this a lot, but it's true--I suck at life. I'm such a failure, such an imbecile, such a jerk. It's really a wonder to me that I have any friends. In the past month especially, I just feel like I've failed at everything, like I can't do anything right. But is it really that I'm failing more? I don't think so. My money's on the fact that I'm just realizing it more. I can see my failure better. And that almost sucks more. It's one thing to realize how much you sin, but it's a whole 'nother thing to realize the depth of that sin.
"I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom. But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death, and resurrection". We sang that song (a beautiful song, I might add) in church recently and Lydia pointed out those lyrics at our makeshift Bible study a couple weeks ago. I've been chewing on it ever since. Or trying, rather. See, I understand and agree with it completely. I do realize that there's no reason, no excuse for me to boast in ANYTHING I've done because it's all Christ. But I'm not quite to the point where I'm living that out. I haven't swallowed it yet (if you will). I do boast in myself--ALL the frickin' time. I place my confidence in myself and my abilities (or lack thereof, rather) or other things that won't last, rather than the eternal perfection that's Christ. I don't look at my life and say "Wow, look what God did there". I say "Man! I'm good!".
And so, to be in this place where I'm realizing the depth and multitude of my sin, but not placing my hope and confidence in His grace...it's hard. To be quite honest, it's depressing. There's a reason I haven't been eating or sleeping well lately. And all I can do is pray that God will smack me upside the head and say "You stupid girl, grow up! This isn't about what you've done. It isn't about you at all! Remember that time I sent my son and had him killed? That took care of all this. Just trust me here."

I'm supposed to be working on a college essay. But I'd rather talk to people and blog. So that is what I'm doing. Luckily, I only have to finish this essay and then write one more and then I'm done completely. And the other one is about why I want to go to Rhodes. Which shouldn't be too hard, although I don't think "I want to play with Katie Jo and Morgan and Jennifer and all my other cool friends in the general vicinity of Memphis" will work.
For whatever reason, I had a really cool day yesterday. I kinda slept in. When I got up, I cleaned out my car, which severely needed it. A paper bag full of trash and numerous pairs of shoes, jeans, a couple sweatshirts and a sleeping bag later, it's all clean. Minus a little bit of egg that I couldn't get off. Yes, someone egged my car last night. And I have no clue who. It really pisses me off. But that's besides the point. So after that, I helped my dad rewire one of the lights in the kitchen. And then we did some work on my car. I never get to do fun mechanical stuff that I don't understand. So that was quite nice.
Then I went to the Duke women's game. Well, first I went to Starbucks to get my first caramel apple cider of the cold weather season. I MUCHLY enjoyed it. Then I went to the first half of the women's game. But I got bored. And I was kinda sick. So I left. And went driving. This time, I took some roads that I'd never been on before. Always a good thing. I ended up on 86 again though (all roads lead to 86?), past Hillsboro. I thought about driving out to the Bevill's farm, but then realized that might be just slightly odd. So I came home. Then my dad and I went out to dinner (my mom and Brian were still in Charlotte). Our waitress was this girl Julie, who I'd just seen a tape of singing "Any Man of Mine", at age 11, as off key as could be. I about choked on my coke when I realized who she was.
So anyway, fun day. Haleigh and I went to the Duke-Auburn women's game today and it was much to close for comfort. Interestingly enough, I had the Duke, UVA and Auburn fight songs all running through my head the entire time. I think I'm just psycho. I went back to Starbucks (there's a reason I'm so broke!) for some peppermint hot cocoa tonight after stopping to see Elyse at work. And I've had some fun IM conversations tonight. So, despite the fact that I suck at it, life is good.
