The Importance of Absurdity

So, Duke-Carolina? Good. Yeah, it sucks that the men lost. But it motivated the women even more. 19-0 baby! 4 straight conference titles! Syliva Hatchell--you suck. Sit down and stop recruiting such stinin' ugly girls. I can't even comprehend how insanely awesome we would have been this year if we'd had Monique Currie and/or Caitlin Howe. Though I've had a pretty crappy day (although it started out nicely enough, but proceeded to snowball), UConn's loss last night to Villanova made my day, because Duke's gonna move back up to number 1, meaning they'll end the season as the AP #1, meaning they'll get at least 3 banners this year--AP #1, ACC Tournament Champs and Final Four, with the very real possibility of getting a NCAA Tournament Champs banner. In fact, it's more than very real. It's extremely real. UConn is now officially capable of losing. And they're completely capable of losing to Duke, especially if Iciss Tillis can get her head out of her butt. Anywhoo, in honor of Duke women's basketball, I'm posting this poem, written by freshman guard (I think she's a guard anyway, she redshirted, so I've never seen her play) Caitlin Howe a week after the Duke-UConn game. And you know you love the last line!

February the first on Saturday Night,
The Crazies came to play their role in this fight.
It was a legendary matchup; number one vs. number two.
Who was to win, Duke or UConn, nobody knew.
Cameron was so full; not a seat was bare.
When I saw the huge crowd, all I could do was stare.
The first sellout crowd for a women's game ever,
Cameron Indoor Stadium this loud I had heard never.
The fans came into the gym and out of the dark,
Some were dressed in costumes (you're the Man, Marc!!)*.
Cameron Crazies overflowed the bleachers,
The blue paint was still wet that covered their features.
Their cheers were many and creative to boot,
A true Cameron Crazy would never be caught mute.
"LUIGI"** and "HUSKY WOMEN" they chanted aloud,
They got the attention of Taurasi who couldn't help but grin at the crowd.
The gym was so loud that we couldn't hear Coach G.
Imagine, that was when we were down by 23!!
As the score got closer, and the time ticked away,
The Crazies let us know that they would never betray.
Our record was without a blemish; 20 and O,
But in the first half we couldn't get into the flow.
Our perfect, undefeated record would not survive,
The final score in favor of UConn was 77 to 65.
The game was broadcast on ESPN2,
And after the game the Blue Devils have never looked so blue.
Just wait 'til we meet those Huskies again,
I know we will, the only question that remains is when?
We have the best fans in the college game,
And I know UConn wishes that they had the same.
With all their chanting, cheering, and blue paint on their chest,
Admit it Geno,...the Cameron Crazies are the BEST!
Even though the loss may make a true fan want to puke,
I have a cure: repeat the chant "Rip 'em Up, Tear 'em Up, Give 'em Hell, Duke!"

(* Marc Thompson, a sophomore Duke student, came dressed as Mario from the video game Mario Brothers.
** The Crazies referred to Geno Auriemma (UConn's head coach) as "Luigi" from Mario Brothers. )
