The Importance of Absurdity

There are very few things that make me miss Virginia. Autumn is one, although I don't so much miss it, since I can hardly remember living in Charlottesville. Weeping Willow trees are another. Snow is the third. Snow days in VA were amazing. We were never worried about having to make up the days that we missed. We weren't annoyed by icy roads. We never got bored. We'd thrown on our snow clothes as soon as mom let us and we'd run outside to meet up with the neighbors. Sometimes we'd build forts and have monstrous snowball fights with Derek, our next-door-neighbor. Sometimes, if there was ice, Sarah and Stacy (Derek's younger sisters) and I would pull out our skates and go skating in the front yard. Sometimes, the 6 of us would get out sleds, or even just pieces of cardboard, and sled down the hill between our houses. Sometimes, I'd go up to Lauren's house and we'd dig a tunnel through the snow that the plow had dumped at the end of the cul-de-sac. Sometimes we'd get all the neighborhood kids together and play a big 'ole game of snow football. Actually, none of the other girls would ever play, they'd just stand and watch. Sometimes Tyler and Jason and Mike Pius would build and igloo and we'd all climb inside. All of us kids had so much fun together, whether we were playing in the snow, playing basketball or football, climbing trees, traipsing through the woods, riding on the bike trail, selling lemonade, walking down to the 7-11, playing in the park, etc. I miss having friends like that.
